Description: Originally known as the ætherphone / etherphone, thereminophone or termenvox / thereminvox. It is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the thereminist [performer]. The instrument named after the Westernized name of its Soviet inventor, Léon Theremin [Лев Сергеевич Термен] who patented the device in 1928.

The theremin is controlled by two oscillators. The first antennae is the frequency oscillator, the second antennae controls the amplitude [volume]. Due to its sound, the theremin is a staple in movie soundtracks and film scores. It finds use in all sorts of musical genres from concert music to rock.
