Description: The tungso [in Hangul 퉁소 or 통소; in Hanja 簫] it is sometimes pronounced as “tongso” it is a Korean notched, end-blown vertical flute. It is played in Korean traditional music. Although similar to the smaller danso it is longer in length and larger in size. The tungso is a parallel instrument to the Chinese xiao and its equivalent variant to the dongxiao and the Japaneses shakuhachi.
Construction: The tungso has a distinctive feature being a buzzing membrane. It is similar in application to the Korean daegeum [transverse flute]. This is especially common in the folk variety of the instrument.
