Description: The jarana jarocha is a eight string five course member of the guitar family of stringed instruments. It is typically used in son jarocho music from Veracruz, Mexico. This style is also called música de cuerdas or son abajeño in other areas within the larger region of Mexico known as the Sotavento.

Construction: Luthiers [lauderos] carve the body, neck, and peg head of the jarana out of a single block of wood [or in the case of my specimen from a split back as see on a classical guitar], with a thin soundboard glued to the front. Mexican cedar is the traditional material used in making these instruments, although woods such as mango, walnut, and others have more recently been used.

Guitarra De Golpe

Type: Chordophones > Lutes > Guitar > Guitarillos > Guitarra.
Hornbostel-Sachs No#: 321.321.5
Scale Length: mm.
Courses: 5.
Frets:
Strings: 5.
Area: Jalisco and Michoacán.
Country: Mexico.
Region: Central America.

Description: The guitarra del golpe is a five stringed member of the guitar family of chordophones. It has five nylon strings in five courses. For a while during the 20th century, the Guitarra Del Golpe fell into disuse in traditional Mariachi groups. It was replaced by the Classical guitar although it has been revived. It is still an essential part of the “conjuntos de arpa” from Michoacán.

The headstock traditionally has a traditional shape that is designed to look like a stylized owl with wooden pegs. But nowadays this is sometimes replaced with a guitar or vihuela style headstock with machine heads.
