Description: The jinghu [京胡; pinyin: jīnghú] it is one of the smallest instruments in the huqin family. Primarily played in Beijing Opera.
Construction: The Jing Hu is constructed with two strings, attached to a neck and body with two tuning pegs and a small bridge that is right underneath the strings and front of the body. Two slit holes in ovoid shape are cut into the bottom of the shaft prior to inserting the shaft into the sound chamber. The hair of the non-detachable bow passes in between the two strings. Its cylindrical sound box is created by stretching a piece of snake skin as a membrane over the front of the bamboo body. Unlike its huqin counterparts Erhu, Gaohu, Zhonghu, the usage of steel strings is quite common.
